Through the vision and determination of Catherine McAuley, a Catholic religious order of women was founded in the late 1820s in an impoverished area of Dublin with a mission to serve the poor. Due to their success the Order grew rapidly in Ireland and soon spread to the United States and other parts of the Americas. The hallmarks of their service were education and medical care.
