Before he was Ireland’s greatest warrior, Cúchulainn was a bold boy named Setanta. One day, while journeying to the court of King Conchobar, he defeated an entire troop of boys in play. Later, on his way to a feast, he slew a ferocious guard dog in self-defense—then offered to take its place until a replacement could be raised. From that day, he was known as Cú Chulainn, the Hound of Culann.
